Effective communication

Scenario

Effective communication

The Learning Challenge – Narative
As teaching is basically communication, it’s important to incorporate all aspects of the communication process. Effective communication within a team will build a common purpose among team members that will allow them to reach their goals. Frequent friendly communication can help group members develop a sense of belonging and strengthen relationships. Strong group communication will create understanding and that understanding will create powerful relationships within a team.

Solving the Problem: Activities for Learning Groups

Activity 1

Title of activity

Meeting clock

Working on the activity – Suggestions

The activity is suitable for various groups, especially new ones. During the “dates”, participants have the opportunity to get acquainted, discuss certain issues. The topics of the meetings are chosen by the moderator (educator), so he can get a lot of necessary information. This activity is also effective as a reflection tool for larger groups of participants (over 12 participants)
Activity 2

Title of activity

Silent Activity

Working on the activity – Suggestions

This activity is based on a non-verbal way of cooperating, that is, group members have to complete a certain task without speaking. Activities are carried out in groups of 4-5 participants. The group gets some materials and has to create some kind of object. It is very interesting to observe how harmoniously the members of the group capture each other’s thoughts and are able to jointly develop the same idea; as they engage in the activity. During the activity, it is possible to observe how the participants perform certain roles: idea generator, leader, executor, etc. Activity can be carried out in any groups. It is suitable to perform with non-native speakers, because the main communication takes place through thoughts and gestures.

Solving the Problem: Self-reflection (educator’s reflection)

Reflecting on the Problem Solving measures taken to overcome the challenge
One of the teacher’s goals is to create a tolerant, friendly environment for each learner, which is important for achieving the learning goals. It largely depends on the teacher’s communication with the students and the communication between the students.
Reflecting on the changes in the group dynamics
The teacher observes the communication and collaboration in the group. It can change the composition of groups for greater learner involvement. Participants can be asked how they felt working in a group.
Reflecting on personal change
By participating in group activities, each participant must make their own contribution to the overall activity by doing what they do best. These skills are important both during learning and in work or social activities.
